The Reclaimed Timber is sourced from salvage yards or old buildings, thus - helping to recycle such a lovely natural resource. All the timber we use is softwood. Reclaimed wood carries all its scars & imperfections from its previous life which may include nail holes, cuts, splits, knots and old construction marks, all adding their own character. The timber being a natural product, boasts varying grain patterns and colours ranging from pale cream-yellows to orange-browns to dark browns. How it's made
Once the timber is at our workshop, each piece is meticulously de-nailed & wire brushed to rid all the years of dirt buildup. It's then processed through the saws and planners and cut down to the required dimensions. The wood then undergoes an exhaustive sanding process with varying grits of sandpaper ensuring a flawlessly smooth finish. The frame & shelf are then assembled, employing whichever techniques are required, transforming into a magnificent showpiece boasting its unique grain pattern and character. This stage also involves the selection of the optimal faces that are seen. Given our endeavour to create " Rustic Farmhouse " pieces, we opt for the most rustic faces. These scars have a life to show - not to be hidden away. The frame is available in various wood stain colours with the centre "Blackboard" in a vibrant Yellow colour. It comes with free Chalks or our pens are available in 2-sized multicolour packs.
Any imperfection such as a split will not impede the integrity or function of the piece.
Dimensions
The result is a nice chunky 22mm thick x 95mm wide timber pieces. The overall frame width is 760mm wide and 760mm in height. The Yelow Board is painted on solid 15mm thick MDF board.
Staining & Painting
Once crafted together the timber is treated with Fiddes Hard Wax Oils. Why Fiddes Hard Wax Oil ?? This professional-grade blend of natural waxes and oils deeply penetrates the timber, preserving its natural appearance while offering a durable, high level of protection, meticulously designed to safeguard the wood. After thorough drying & curing, we apply an additional 2 clear topcoats to further enhance protection. Also, available in various colour tints of your choosing. The "Blackboard" itself is cut from MDF or Medium Density Fibreboard. MDF is made up of highly compressed wood fibres, which makes it dense & strong. It is also less likely to crack or warp and is used extensively in furniture making, cabinetry, construction etc. MDF is also made from recycled wood fibres which minimizes waste. The MDF Blackboard is a nice solid 15mm thick!. It undergoes multiple coats of primer & undercoat paint with a light sanding between each coat before the multiple top coats are applied.
Fittings & Fixings
Raw plugs & screws are supplied with our items. However, depending on your wall type, you may need to source the correct fixings for your wall. Most of our items only require a basic DIY skillset.
